Book 1: March 31st, 1939 Warsaw, Poland

Jozef got out of his father's black Ford car and shut the door behind him.  He looked up to the large red apartment building in front of him. He made his way to the back of the car and opened the truck door, with five boxes stuffed in the back. Jozefs father, Bonik, got out of the car as well and walked to the back of the car to help carry in boxes.

"You know you don't have to move out," his father suggested to him.

"I'm not going to be a burden on both you at mom now that I am about to turn twenty."

"You're not a burden.  Your mother and I always enjoyed you living at home.

"Jozef grabbed a box from the back of the car. "I'm only three blocks away dad. I can still take the street car to come see you." Jozef began to make his way to the door of the apartment building, as a boy riding on a bicycle rode by and threw a wad of newspapers on the side walk in front of the apartment building. The headlines read Independence for Poland.

"Looks like the British have finally given us some freedom of our own," said Jozefs father.

"Yea, about time," replied Jozef as he struggled to open the door to the apartment building. He held the door as his father made his way to the door with a box in his arms. They both claimed up three sets of stairs before they came to an apartment numbered 302. Jozef put the key into the lock and opened the door.
The apartment seemed cozy. A small balcony to the back, a well sized kitchen to the right of the door, one bedroom to the left, and one bathroom connected to the bedroom. Jozef walked to the left of the door and over to the couch, were he placed the box he was carrying.

"Well, home sweet home. Wouldn't you say," asked Jozef to his father. He turned around and noticed his father looking out onto the balcony, with his hands lead over on the railing.  Jozef made his way over to the small balcony then stood next to his father.

The wind blew Jozefs bangs around in front of his face. The sun could be seen setting over the horizon of the city.

"God is good my boy. Don't you forget that? When God has delivered us out of Egypt and into the great land, who could not say God is good." Jozef grinned.

"It is a great time we live in? All is calm in the world. No one wants to fight anymore." Jozef looked over to his father, who was focused on the sunset. The wrinkles on his face showed more than they had in the past.

"If there is ever a time close enough to peace, it's would be now. We have our independence and freedom, and no one can take it away from us."

Jozef looked back to the sunset and smiled, "Yes, Papa."

He then heard a knock at the door behind them. Celestyn was seen standing at the door. Both Jozef and Bonik walked away from the balcony and over to Celestyn.  Jozef walked over to Celestyn and embraced her in his arms.

"Hi," he said to her with a smile. "Hi," she replied, then gave him a kiss. Celestyn then faced Bonik and gave him a hug.

"Hello Mr. Tanek. How are things with you?" Jozefs father smiled to the young women, "All is well my dear. Thanks for asking."

Jozefs father then started to walk to the door, turning back to look at the young couple.

"I'm going to go get a few more boxes," he said to them. "I'll be down in a minute Papa," yelled Jozef to his father as Bonik started his way down the stair case.

"What were you two talking about," asked Celestyn.

"A lot of things." He smiled to her and gave her another kiss. Jozef walked over into the middle of the apartment.

"What do you think," he asked with an anxious voice. "It's cozy, I guess," she said to him.
